 NSK is underlining its commitment to clean green energy generation by expanding and reinforcing its wind power generation bearing business. The objective of these initiatives is to achieve sales of 10 billion yen, and a 20% share of the global market for wind generator bearings by 2010.
The global market for bearings used in wind power generators currently stands at about 30 billion yen. This is forecasted to grow to around 50 billion yen within five years. NSK is responding to this upward trend by advancing development of bearings (usually spherical roller types) for the main shafts of wind-power generators, which are getting increasingly larger year on year. The company is also augmenting its sales and technical staff in charge of the business field full-time.
Commenting upon these developments, an NSK spokesman said: “We believe that expanding our wind power generator bearings business will enhance the technical level of our bearing operations, generally, as well as improving our brand image in Europe, where major general industrial machine makers are active alongside manufacturers of wind-power generators.”
Underpinning NSK’s development plan for wind power generator bearings is an investment of more than ￥10.8 billion in a new industrial machinery bearing plant in Fujisawa City, Japan. Once complete, the new facility is expected to increase NSK’s manufacturing volume from the current level of ￥60 billion to ￥80 billion in two years.
The new Fujisawa plant will extend to an area of 15,000 square metres and employ over 100 extra employees. Production is scheduled to start in January 2008, manufacturing bearings for industrial machinery applications, such as steel equipment, machine tools, construction equipment, aircraft, robots, as well as wind power generators.
